Day 17 - Electronics by AlwaysBreaking

PRESS RELEASE

Yamada-Denki Co., Ltd. Starts Trial Sales of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation's i-MiEV

- First Collaboration in Japan between Automobile Maker and Electronics Retailer for Electric Vehicle Sales -
Tokyo, December 1, 2010 – Yamada-Denki Co., Ltd. (Yamada Denki) and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to start trial sales of the i-MiEV electric vehicle (EV) in Yamada Denki retail stores and sales*1 will begin from today at total of 17 stores, including Tokyo, Kanagawa and Saitama prefectures.

Yamada Denki, as part of its “smart house business,” will place salespersons specialized in EVs in addition to staff from 17 stores which are already participating in an automobile sales program in order to accelerate their sales. Furthermore, Yamada-Denki will implement proactive public relations activities, such as establishing an exhibition hall for i-MiEV in the Techland Yokohama Izumi store on December 4, and moving forward will also offer total solutions to customers, such as installments of solar energy systems to charging stations, and events including test drive events.

The impetus for the project started from the E-Kizuna Project that was held this April in Saitama City when both companies attended the “1st E-Kizuna Forum in Saitama.” At the Forum, both MMC and Yamada Denki discussed the possibility of sales of EVs at electronics retailers, under the common understanding that promotion and popularization of EVs has an important role to play in achieving a low-carbon society.

Yamada-Denki has been proactive in its efforts towards environmental issues, and as part of the “smart-house business,” has already started planning and sales for energy-saving eco-friendly products such as solar electricity generators, EcoCute, and 100% electric-powered home electric systems. In the future, EVs will be able to act as an energy sources, and it is forseen that EVs will play an important role in efficient electrical distribution and usage in households; and by initiating sales of EVs Yamada Denki is proactively promoting total solutions in its “smart house business.”

MMC introduced the i-MiEV in Japan in July 2009, has started individual sales from this April and has sold about 3,000 units so far in Japan. In order to popularize EVs, a nonconventional automobile category, implementation of nonconventional new initiatives that go beyond the boundary of the industry are necessary. Moving forward, cooperation with electronics retailers, who will be able to provide ideas about new ways to use EVs in living environments will hold a deeper importance.

A committee organized by Saitama City on April 26, 2010 in order to have a place for related parties (national government, heads of 10 leading companies and 20 municipal bodies) to exchange information and opinions to make possible a low-carbon society where safe and pleasant EV travel is possible anywhere.

Gary's electronics lab by gem66

Another Black Friday has come and gone, and we've still got a couple of days before Cyber Monday–but if you're a big box retailer like Best Buy, now is no time to take a break. The company is offering loads of deals on electronics this weekend, from familiar names like Apple, Flip, Samsung, and Canon.

Check out some of the best deals, after the jump.

Blu-ray Player and Samsung 46 inch $999.98 (Down from $1,879.00)

Canon – PowerShot SD 1400 $140.99 (Down from $249.99)

Flip Video UltraHD $139.99 ($199.99)

Apple MacBook Pro $1,199 ($1,324.99)

Nintendo Wii Console (Black) w/Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, and Wii Remote Plus $169 ($199)

Samsung – Galaxy Tab 3G (Sprint) $549.99 ($599.99)

The Story of Electronics, releasing Tuesday, NOVEMBER 9, employs the Story of Stuff style to explore the high-tech revolution’s collateral damage—25 million tons of e-waste and counting, poisoned workers and a public left holding the bill. Host Annie Leonard takes viewers from the mines and factories where our gadgets begin to the horrific backyard recycling shops in China where many end up. The film concludes with a call for a green ‘race to the top’ where designers compete to make long-lasting, toxic-free products that are fully and easily recyclable.

Nintendo DS - Game Collection - 30 August 2008 by Eleven Eight

The Avalanche are at Rogers Arena tonight to take on the Vancouver Canucks. First place is on the line for both clubs – if the Canucks win in regulation, they would retake the NW Division led from the Avs (thanks to the wins tiebreaker) and vault from 8th to 3rd in the Conference. The Canucks are ice cold, having dropped their last 4 by a combined score of 17-7. That's a bad omen.

The Avs want to stay in first tonight, but a win is also important to them for the potential tiebreaker implications at the end of the season. Vancouver has won the first two meetings between the clubs and the Avs need a regulation win to make sure they still have a shot at the head to head tiebreaker.

While Vancouver has won both games between the two clubs this year, this is the first start for Craig Anderson against the Canucks this year. He hurt his knee warming up during the first meeting in Vancouver back on October 26th, and Peter Budaj handled both starts against Vancouver in his absence. Anderson doesn't have great career numbers against Vancouver; he's just 2-8-1 with a 3.52 GAA and an .878 save percentage against them.

The Canucks may be struggling, but they still own on special teams, with the #1 ranked PP and the #5 ranked PK. They have 4 PP already against the Avalanche while the Avalanche have..uh, zero. It seems like the key to the game for the Avs will be to stay out of the penalty box and score a bunch of even strength goals. Do that, and first place will still belong to us.

Go Avs.

I pretty much don’t play video games at all anymore*, however one recent exception was Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3. It could reasonably be described as half movie, half video game, and the gameplay is unusual, kind of like a modern version of X-COM. Probably the worst thing about the game is that it’s single player, and you pretty much have to commit about an hour per sit-down.

    * To give an idea, the next most recent game I put any amount of time in is the original Halo, and before that the original Aliens versus Predator.

I concur in the recommendation of Mount&Blade Warband. Great sandbox RPG/Battle/Simulation mixed genre game.

King’s Bounty: The Legend makes is a great RPG/Strategy game with many humorously insanely twisted ideas :)

The older but still easy to acquire Divine Divinity RPG is a great mostly forgotten gem. One often hears it described as an action RPG in the Diablo mold by those who played the demo or the first hour or so of the approximately eighty to a hundred odd hours offered. After the first village the world expands enormously and has more in common with the old Ultima games.

The successor Divinity 2: The Dragon Knight Saga is also an expansive RPG that compares favourably to the much hyped Dragon Age. It might not have the most original plot but is full of wonder, action, novel mechanics and you get to play as a dragon too!

I highly recommend anything by Paradox Interactive. Very high level grand-strategy games. Think of a more detailed Civ in pausable real-time. Europa Universalis III (with all expansions, very important) is my current favourite. Victoria 2 has a more detailed economy and Hearts of Iron 3 is great for the more detailed combat mechanics.

    All work in Wine.

I’m playing through Bioshock again to complete the achievements, and if you haven’t tried them they’re pretty good. This one is multiplatform, but the vast majority of my game collection is Nintendo / Xbox 360.

I hear Civ 5 is out and has changed gameplay quite a bit. And I quite like Civ Revolution’s multiplayer that can be completed within a lifetime.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is my new standard for immersiveness. It has a realistic first-person viewpoint, instead of the traditional floating camera behind your back.

Assassin’s Creed 2 has beautiful environments (the first one is also very nice, although the second has better gameplay). Overlord II is a fun poke at high fantasy tropes, and fun gameplay as well (I recommend the first one too, but the second is nicer).

Speaking of humour, DeathSpank takes the heroic fantasy way over the top, to good effect, but its cardboard-cutout style graphics aren’t exactly immersive.

On PS3 I have played only two games and enjoyed them both. 1) Call of duty: Modern Warfare 2) Resistance: Fall of Man

On PC I have recently enjoyed ‘Osmos’ game from Hemisphere Games. It is a simple but interest phycis based game.
And of course my long time favorite is Battle of Wesnoth. It is a turn based game but I enjoy it very much.

Heavy Rain. I love this game so much. The latest patch adds Move support to it. I’m thinking of buying a Playstation Move for the sole reason of playing this game with motion controls.

When all else fails, give the ball to Dirk Nowitzki and let him work.  Nowitzki's season-high 42 points secured an 88-84 victory against the Detroit Pistons.  The game was eerily similar to their game last week against Chicago, which was also on the first night of a back-to-back, the Mavericks received better results in this match-up.

In what Rick Carlisle called a “playoff style game” due to the slower tempo and necessity to work in the half-court, the Mavericks responded in a game that easily could have gone the other way.  “We had some good opportunities in the first half that we just couldn’t cash in on. It was disappointing after getting off to a big lead,” said Carlisle.  “But games go like this sometimes, and you’ve just got to stay in it. You’ve got to battle; we got down 12 and battled back. I give our guys a lot of credit. It was a slow game, it was the kind of game you had to have patience and discipline to hang in and win. You had to make plays when it counted, and we were able to do it.”

The pace of the game was slow and the Mavericks only had 8 turnovers and Detroit scored only 3 points off of those turnovers.  “There were very few thin margins for error tonight for both teams,” Carlisle said when breaking down the game against the team that gave him his first head coaching opportunity.  “It was just a little bit extra down the stretch, being able to get stops and get  the crowd into it and execute on offense and we escaped.”

Dallas trailed 67-61 in the fourth quarter, but used a 14-3 run beginning at the 9:11 mark to take a 75-70 lead and did enough to maintain the lead. The Mavericks scored 32 points in the fourth quarter, a season-high for fourth quarters, and Caron Butler ignited the offense with his penetration and aggression to start the game.  “I think early in the 4th quarter, (Butler) tried to be aggressive and made some good plays for us,” said Nowitzki.  Butler scored 7 points in the final frame, Nowitzki took care of the scoring load in the middle part of the quarter and then Jason Terry finished the game off for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks have hit a rough stretch where Nowitzki is having to carry the scoring load on his shoulders, Dirk 13-23 from the field while the rest of the team shot 17-55.  Should the team be concerned? “There’s somewhat of a concern,” Jason Terry said of the offense. “But, it’s still November. It’s still early and guys are still getting comfortable with their roles, knowing when they’re coming in the game and what not. It’s all about flow and rhythm. Do you want to have that flow right now in the first month? You’d like it, but does it mean anything? Not necessarily. So, it’s a work in progress.”

The work will continue on Wednesday against Oklahoma City

    Quick Notes:

    - Rick Carlisle noted that Shawn Marion was feeling ill and wasn't himself during the game.  Marion should be fine against the Thunder on Wednesday.

    - Dirk Nowitzki recorded his 5th double-double of the season, 42 points and 12 rebounds.  The Mavericks are 5-0 when Nowitzki records a double-double.

    - The early season turnover issues continue to trend back in the right direction as the Mavericks only had 8 turnovers against the Pistons.  The Mavericks are now 5-1 on the year when committing fewer turnovers than their opponent.

    - Roddy Beaubois continues to work on getting back on the court.  He was checked out by doctors and there were no setbacks.  He's beginning to do elliptical work and build his cardio back up, Nowitzki can't wait to have him back. “We definitely need somebody who can consistently get in the paint and make stuff easier and I think that’s where we’re waiting on Roddy  to make some stuff happen because he’s that explosive guy that can get in the paint,” Nowitzki said. “I think J-Kidd can’t do it anymore on a consistent basis. Jet’s a shooter. I’m a shooter. Caron’s more of a shooter, so we don’t really have a guy that consistently gets in the paint and makes stuff easy.  Hopefully Roddy will come back and open our offense up a little bit.”  When asked about Caron being that kind of guy Nowitzki said, “If you watch his career, he's a great mid-range guy…he's got a lot of that in his repertoire.  I think early in the 4th quarter, he tried to be aggressive and made some good plays for us.”

    - Entering tonight, Nowitzki was shooting 52.8% (112-of-212 from the field).  He's on pace to shoot above 50% for the second time in his career.  The highest percentage he's ever shot from the field in his career was 50.2% in 2006-2007.  Three letters come to mind when you think of that year: M-V-P.

We all knew that one kid that grew up getting everything he wanted. You know, the one that was always first to get all the cool electronics. Jealousy sets in, especially during the holiday season when all the other children begin asking their parents why they aren’t as loved. A response something like “spoiling never gets anyone anywhere” usually follows, or that being the first isn’t necessarily the best. Later, I learned this when my PlayStation still worked years down the road.

It’s easy to see that throwing comforts and amenities isn’t simply the answer to success or happiness. And as in-car electronics approach infinity, we see that one automaker is taking the similar approach of my childhood friends’ parents—Spoil ‘em.

    Pounds of Package

When spec-ing out an M37, you already start with a decent amount of standard tech, such as intelligent key with push button start, HID lights, power folding mirrors and telescoping wheel, XM and USB audio, rear camera, Bluetooth and Homelink. Go for the $3,000 Technology Package and you add a beta adaptive cruise control, the Eco Pedal that slows down acceleration with reverse pressure on the driver’s foot when the go force is too strong. For sportier handling, active trace control is included in the tech package — a genius track-inspired software program that optimizes front brake pressure during turns dependent on steering angle. Also, blind spot and lane departure warnings and interventions are the first of its kind in the M, where the car will actually brake the opposite side wheels to which a slight veer is occurring, bringing the car back onto the road — this is a neat idea, but we learned that it didn’t work too well.

The next package to be added was the $2,000 Sport Touring Package, which added a 16-speaker Bose, Forest Air™ system, and power rear sunshade. The Bose system was okay, but there really hasn’t been much improvement in Bose’s sound quality in a while. Forest Air™ was pretty neat; a seemingly gimmicky option that became well appreciated. The system acts more like nature in that it blows air at an inconsistent rate similar to breathing, eliminating that annoying air in the face feeling.

Adding to the extensive list is the $3,650 Sport Package. This is a must-have for this car, but it’s also something of a catch-22. The 20-inch wheels make up a large part of the M’s beauty, but then the car suffers from a loud cabin, harsh ride and tram-lining on rutted roads — but without the 20-inchers, the wheels look like they came off a Honda Civic. Then there’s the $3,350 Premium Package, it adds the 8-inch touchscreen navigation with XM traffic and weather and Zagat reviews, voice recognition, Bluetooth streaming audio, 9.3GB music box, cooled front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Buttons, Buttons, who’s got the Buttons?

Start counting all the buttons on just your fingers and you’ll end up needing more friends than the car can hold. While many can appreciate an upfront view of every big/little button, the layout can be overwhelming and ugly. The ergonomics of the buttons were so-so; some made sense (climate controls), while others drove us crazy. Like the location of the audio controls: the power button kept getting hit by our knees, and most of the other buttons were in the way of the shifter, requiring an eyes-off-the-road navigated reach. What bothered us most was the location of the rotary dial, which didn’t work for some actions, including scrolling through XM stations. It’s easy to mistake the drive mode selector for a rotary dial, as that is the location is most other cars. It were these little things kept us asking, “who thunk that?” The correct button to scroll XM stations was found a few days later.

XM traffic and weather was used at least once a day, especially so because the entire week was full of severe weather alerts. Voice activation was awful at first, correctly guessing less than half the time. That is, until a training session was performed to better acclimate the car to my voice. Still it didn’t get one single name in my phonebook right, which meant it was time to work out those delts again.

Now for some of the safety systems listed above, I’ll have you know that the car does not drive itself and trying make it do so will put you in a ditch. Instead, get caught texting while driving over the center line and the system might pull you back and notify you of being a nincompoop — though next generations should be better. And, if you’re one of those who like all the nanny stuff turned off, don’t worry, it comes disabled from the factory.

Drive it like you stole it

There is no doubt that the M37S is a screamer — especially in its sport attire, which comes with the love em/hate em 20-inch wheels and performance tires, 4-wheel active steering, sport suspension, sporty looks, rev-matching paddle shifters and sport brakes—ours were even better thanks to the R SPEC brake pad option.

Driving the M is a treat for a driver, carving corners feels so good and don’t expect much in the over/understeer department because the stability software is excellent — the interface guy could learn from the stability guy. The brakes are strong and you can have a lot of fun dancing around corners with the 330-horsepower high-revving engine. Our favorite thing to do was downshifting and gassing and hearing the cat-like 3.7-liter VQ scream. It sounds that good.

The M has what is called a Infiniti Drive Mode Selector, which is one of those dials that is supposed to control the feel of the car. We only noticed a change in the transmission. In ECO mode, the car was very slow. You really have to push hard if you are trying to make a left turn in traffic.

    Rides like a roller coaster

This was the consensus from four out of five passenger seat rides. Most complained of sickness during heavily trafficked city driving. They blamed the harsh ride, loud road noise and jerky transmission. It was only bearable, apparently, in ECO mode. It is one of the only vehicles my friend didn’t want to ride in.

The ride in the M needs to be better. If not for those passengers, then for the sake of the driver relationships. It seems to suffer from an imbalance between sport and comfort.

    Overly M-bellished

A few more months of thought — and possibly different interior designers — could have had the M leading its class in terms of in-car experience, but instead it gets schooled. The menu structure is terribly lame and there are so many times we are caught saying, “if they just (….), it would have been much better.” It’s the details, it’s always the details. Sure, after being acquainted to the car, it became a bit easier, but the interface still felt antiquated. And not in the way that it’s so bad that you’d rather just drive and not be distracted, its in the way that simple tasks you need are just annoying and uneasy.

There are some really great things about Infiniti’s new M, surprisingly it is a very fun-to-drive car with great looks, but the interface between man and computer gives off a senior citizen feeling. It’s that reason alone that we can’t help but consider the M anything more than a hot freshman.

Arguing for the government: Armine Aleksanian

If you’re thinking San Francisco’s ban on toys with unhealthy Happy Meals wasn’t making news worldwide, consider this. The Center for Science in the Public Internet (CSPI) plans on suing McDonald’s if the fast-food chain continues to use toys to promote Happy Meals. The message is that the Happy Meal should be banned from all the fast-food restaurants in California. It’s unhealthy for our children and it’s unnecessary to trick them by offering toys with an extremely unhealthy meal.

San Francisco’s supervisors voted 8 to 3 in favor of banning the Happy Meal. This is a very interesting law that attempts to reduce childhood obesity rates, which have tripled over the past 30 years.

Public health advocates welcomed the action, calling it a small step toward decreasing the rate of childhood obesity. McDonald’s isn’t so happy about what San Francisco is doing to its Happy Meals.

“We are extremely disappointed with this decision,” McDonald’s spokesperson Dayna Proud said in a statement. “It’s not what our customers want, nor is it something they asked for.”

In any case, all fast-food restaurants that offer toys with a meal will have until December 2011 to modify and boost nutrition in their kids meals if they want to offer toys with the foods. The law states that the foods need to have a total caloric value of less than 600 calories and a sodium restriction of 640 milligrams.

I am an aunt of a 5-year-old boy. At such a young age, all my nephew want to eat is the Happy Meal at McDonald’s. He gets extremely happy to be served a yummy meal, with a toy. It’s really hard for my sister to see his disappointed face every time she offers to get apple slices instead of french fries. So instead, she says, “Hey, maybe french fries just this time is okay.”

Of course, I agree that parents have the ability to make a decision if they want to take their kids to get unhealthy meals, and the government should not take over control. At the same time, parents aren’t just taking their kids to eat fast food. It’s the kids that are asking. The aforementioned Yale study found that 40 percent of children between the ages of two and 11 ask to go to McDonald’s every week. If the Happy Meal is banned, children will no longer be able to get a toy with their meal, and their desire for eating a burger with french fries every week will stop.

I am one of many supporters of this law. It shouldn’t stop at San Francisco. In a couple of years, fast-food restaurants that offer such meals shouldn’t be allowed to sell them anymore. Our children are our first priority, and their health is very important to us. We need to keep our kids healthy. Happy Meals need to be banned. It might not be the most subtle method, but this clash of law and industry will bring along positive changes.

Arguing for the opposition: Thomas Herera

Policies are now taking place that force citizens to lose their right of liberty; the liberty to eat foods that offend the government. Such a policy is now being presented to the citizens that reside in San Francisco where a recently established law banned McDonalds, or any other restaurant, from serving high sodium and fat meals with a toy.

The government has taken it upon themselves to rid citizens of the ability to designate what is appropriate for their life and for their family. They blame child obesity on fast-food restaurants, stating that the obesity rates have risen because of the toys given in happy meals. The government assumes that parents are irresponsible and cannot moderate their child’s nutrition.

The truth is that parents have more control of their children’s diet today than in the past. Companies have now been labeling the amount of calories in their food, giving out pamphlets, and posting nutritional facts by cash registers.

Parents are capable of supervising and moderating their kid’s diets and the toy isn’t the problem. Princeton University’s Stephen Daniels, author of  “The Consequences of Childhood Overweight and Obesity” said, “The link between parental overweight and childhood obesity is likely to be both genetic and environmental, and untangling the two is often difficult.”

He understands it’s not fast-food restaurants who are at fault it, instead it could be by their environment or a hereditary issue.

The government fails to allude to any other possibilities that could have resulted in this rise, such as the lack of exercise. These citizens who where robed of their childhood happiness and liberty of choice were only given an ultimatum, but never showed that obesity could have resulted from many other possibilities.

Sara Gable and Susan Lutz state in their article “Family Relations” that “childhood obesity is not caused by one thing; rather, obesity results from the interplay of multiple factors. For instance demographics parenting beliefs and practices, child television viewing and physical activity…can lead to early obesity and with child obesity itself. ”

McDonalds does offer alternative meals to kids that are healthier and will allow the kids to still get their advertised toy. Parents can purchase a happy meal that contains a hamburger or chicken nuggets as well as a soda, milk, or apple juice, and if you don’t want your kids eating fries they can substitute them for apple dippers.

The problems in child obesity are alarming but to blame them on a toy not only gives the children anguish but is just as bad as shattering the American dream for citizens.

Tintinhull Gardens, Somerset by sminky_pinky100 (In and Out)

Last week, as the country honored veterans, Plainfield community members gathered for a special homecoming for one of its own.

The community welcomed Army Spc. Frank Pierson to his new custom-made home, built through Home For Our Troops.

See more pictures from Saturday’s event here.

Inclement weather didn’t deter the crowd, who gathered outside the ranch-style house, to celebrate the efforts of countless volunteers and donations to build the home for Pierson and his wife, Arielle Carroll.

“It may be raining but it is a great day,” Brig. Gen. Robert Pratt said.

Pierson was injured in 2008 just three months after he was deployed to Baghdad by an electrically fired projectile. As a result of his injuries, Pierson’s legs were amputated. He endured 19 months of surgeries and rehabilitative therapy.

The home was specially designed for Pierson, who uses a wheelchair, with wide open rooms and light switches and controls within reach.

Tom Benoit, CFO for Homes for Our Troops, said it is the fifth home the agency has completed in Illinois.  The agency has provided more than 70 homes for veterans across the country.

The house still needs to be painted and the furniture moved in before the couple and their service dog, Leo, settle in later this month.

“This is a great addition to the new year and it should definitely make Christmas special,” Pierson said.

His wife of three years, Carroll, said she’s excited to decorate the home for the holidays.

“I love Christmas, it’s my favorite,” she said.

The couple visited the home during construction, Carroll said, to thank the volunteers working and to meet some of the new neighbors.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Flames ravaged and destroyed the home of five Albuquerque residents Sunday night.

The fire started around 8:30 p.m. Sunday near Coors Boulevard and Los Padillas Road. A couple and their three children were home at the time of the fire, and all got out safely.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“We're focusing on the water heater area. We can't tell exactly why, but it is pretty obvious that somewhere in the water heater area, the fire did start.” Jim Dye, with the Bernalillo County Fire Department said.

Fire investigators said they suspect the fire started because the gas water heater was being powered by propane.

“Right now, the gas company is looking into that. Any time you try to mix propane or natural gas, they have different properties, they will cause a fire,” Dye said.

The American Red Cross is helping the family who lost their home.

Unfortunately, since then I acquired a Felony on my record, due to an altercation on the road. (More or less a road rage incident). So now my chance At a reputable company has just about diminished. Any Ideas for a fairly simple Business to start? At Home business? Any type of business?

I am both mechanically and technically inclined, computer and internet savvy, overall I have above average intelligence (yeah right, I have a felony!) with an education.

    Any recommendations?

Electronics recycling (including computers and televisions) & building material reuse by Montgomery Cty Division of Solid Waste Services

The Story Of Electronics debuts online today, the latest in a series of short films by Annie Leonard, whose original viral video The Story Of Stuff surpassed 12 million views. This installment explains ‘planned obsolescence’— electronics designed to be replaced as quickly as possible—and its often hidden consequences for tech workers, consumers and the environment.

The Electronics TakeBack Coalition— a group that advocates for sustainable design and electronics producer responsibility— joined as a co-producer, framing issues and providing research for the script, working with Leonard’s long time creative partners Free Range Studios.

The Story Of Electronics, today, is a tragedy. Its main characters include: executives in charge of consumer electronics companies who allow their designers to use toxic materials and worse; consumers who accept built-in obsolescence and cannot control their appetites for everything from smart phones to high-def TVs; and citizens of developing nations living or working around e-waste, their land and water polluted by PVC, mercury, solvents, flame retardants as a result of another country’s consumer habits.

The video (embedded below) covers some startling facts about e-waste including:

Typical “fat” TVs, dumped to make way for flat screen, each have about 5 pounds of lead in them

It costs more to repair a DVD player than it does to buy a new one today

Every year, consumers create 25 metric tonnes of electronics waste

Computer factory workers, in a recent study, had 40% more miscarriages than the general population (thanks to exposure to toxic materials)

A national coordinator with The Electronics TakeBack Coalition who worked on this project, Barbara Kyle, added to that list:

“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has found that we are still trashing about 85% of our electronics, with only 15% is getting into the hands of recyclers. We’re exporting a lot of that still, which means e-waste strategy is to literally poison people in other parts of the globe. This has happened long enough that scientists have been able to go and find adults with high dioxin levels, and kids with high lead poisoning from our e-waste. We’ve got to look at the big picture here and think beyond ‘What does this product do for me,’ and ask ‘When I’m done with it, where will it go?’”

The Story Of Electronics and Electronics TakeBack Coalition websites present ideas about how to turn the tragedy around, thankfully. Kyle suggests:

Asking manufacturers to design and make more recyclable, longer lasting, non-toxic products

Sponsoring or participating in design competitions (like this one) that encourage sustainable innovation

When they’re spent, taking electronics to E-Stewards, recyclers that promise not to export them

Supporting legislation that would curb exports of toxic e-waste, at the moment the U.S. HR 6252

Buying from companies that take back electronics when they are broken or obsolete, to dispose of them responsibly

The launch of Greenomics, now in its third year, was born out of LG Electronics determination to ignite a positive change across all aspects of life. It aims to find innovative yet practical solutions for the challenges facing the environment and support governments, environmental experts, businesses and individuals in becoming more environmentally responsible.

Greenomics is part of LG's overarching environmental management strategy that seeks to introduce a full range of innovative and greener products and services. Reinforcing this commitment, LG will invest nearly $18m (20 trillion KRW) into green businesses, including solar cell and next generation lighting, by 2020.

With an impressive array of speakers who ranged from top government delegates to leading thought leaders from the international academic community and key local business heads, the one day summit resulted in a deeper understanding of critical environmental measures that work to increase productivity, profitability, competitiveness while improving environmental and energy performances.

Clean production is based on the basic idea that nature is effective, and as such forms a central part of LG's green credo which was formally set in 1994 with the declaration of LG's environmental vision. Last year, LG established a voluntary target of reducing greenhouse gases by 150,000 tons from manufacturing and 30 million tons from product use in 2020.

As a true corporate protector of the environmental vision, LG has been practicing environmental management throughout the life-cycle from development and purchasing through production and use to disposal, and reducing the environmental impacts that occur during business activities. Being a true leader in practices such as clean production, LG is in a perfect position to align efforts with pivotal public and private entities in its effort to share international best practice models and significantly contribute to the nation's sustainable policies.

Mr. Ki Wan Kim, CEO and President of LG Electronics Middle East and Africa added; “As part of LG Electronics' environmental vision LG is not only committed to practicing environmental management, but also to sharing best practice with the corporate community and uniting efforts to ensure optimal uptake of key initiatives. We have shown again, that Greenomics has provided a compelling platform for change and we are fortunate to have been part of what will be a significant change in the UAE's environmental protection policies.”

Greenomics 2010 is a day long annual conference with attendance from over 250 high level attendees including industry and thought leaders, government entities, business conglomerates, environmental specialists, blue chip companies and academia, among others.
The conference concluded with the signing of the 'Green Protocol' where a pledge to promote and adopt clean production strategies and techniques was signed by the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water, LG Electronics, UNIDO and media partner Khaleej Times.

The Story of Electronics animated film launched today. This is the latest film in the incredible Story of Stuff series (aka Cliff Notes for the armchair environmentalist), which includes the Story of Cosmetics, the Story of Cap and Trade, and the Story of Bottled Water. I talked to Barbara Kyle, the National Coordinator of the San Francisco-based Electronics TakeBack Coalition, about the project and its key messages.

Can you describe how Electronics bubbled up as the next theme to prioritize in the Story of Stuff series? Why this topic, why now?

The Story of Stuff series is all about consuming—all the stuff we buy—and what the real costs are (even if we aren't paying these costs). So the team at Story of Stuff (SOS) was interested in the electronics issue from the beginning, since we are purchasing (and disposing of) electronics at an unbelievable rate. Why now? We are about to enter the holiday buying frenzy that starts around Thanksgiving, when a huge amount of the year's electronics purchases are made.

So the goal is to bring awareness, thereby changing behavior. What is process for creating a piece with that kind of aspiration?

Right. That's a primary goal with all the Story of Stuff (SOS) films: to make people aware of the invisible impacts, so they'll think and act differently. We, the Electronics Takeback Coalition (ETBC), sat down with Annie Leonard, SOS, and the Free Range team to talk through core themes and primary messages, and how they fit with the SOS storyline on product lifecycles. (This is where Free Range is such an important partner in this project—they don't just take a script and animate it. They are part of the development of the whole project.) We brainstormed on some of the key elements, examples, important facts, possible visual images. Really, the hard part is paring it all down to fit in a short film. From there, Annie, her team, and Free Range developed the script, which went through several drafts. Once the script was finalized, and Annie was filmed, the illustration started. To me, this is the magical part—the storytelling is good, but it really comes alive after the animations are added. All the SOS films are viewed online, and there are great resources on the actual site to take action after viewing.

It sounds like a solid iterative process. I'm sure that the SOS team has developed a fairly strong model for moving from interest area to production. The online distribution has enabled the animations to be incredibly viral. The number of views of each film is one measure of the message getting out—how else to you measure success?

I think a big goal is to get a conversation started about these topics, especially with people who haven't been talking about it before. This is where the social media aspects are really helpful. Viewers post it and start talking with their friends, on blogs, as well as talking with the Story of Stuff and the NGOs that partner on these films. These social media tools provide good metrics for measuring how many people are involved in the conversation, joining the groups, making posts, tweeting on specific topics, etc. Since it's all online, it's pretty easy to track where viewers come from. The Story of Stuff team reports that around 40% of the viewers of their films get there via Facebook. And the number of viewers is staggering. The original Story of Stuff film has had 12 million viewers, and still growing. The recent one on bottled water has over a million views.

Another measure is whether some of the people who are talking about it will take action toward solutions. The SOS short films are made in partnership with NGOs working on the issues featured in the films, and the films offer ways for people to get engaged in the issues—from changing their own behavior from stopping buying bottled water, or use a responsible e-waste recycler, to contacting legislators on important policies and telling companies to change what they are doing. That's a really important measure of success—since we won't be successful if we don't make some changes.

So the partner NGO (in this case your organization) creates the support system for viewers who are motivated by the film and want to provide direction for talking action. What sort of programming do you have in place? What sorts of activities specifically do you encourage? What are the best steps an individual can take?

Yes, the film educates and motivates viewers, and the partner groups provide the “what you can do” options. There are many ways people can get involved. We will be offering some suggestions for what they can do with their own e-waste, and for thinking about what electronics they are buying at home, work, or school. Really, we need to use our purchasing power to encourage these companies to design better products—to give us better options for what to buy. So we will have a way for people to communicate that to the companies. People can also weigh in with their elected representatives (at the state and federal level) on important policies dealing with e-waste exporting and e-waste recycling.

I know that the conversation should really be focused on what is purchased and consumed, but in terms of what someone can do right now, what are your recommendation for e-waste disposal?

Actually, that issue is touched on in the film, and it's a priority issue for my coalition's work. People can absolutely make a difference by making good choices for what they do with their old electronic products – at home, at work, and at school. It's really shocking how much e-waste goes into the trash still—85% in the U.S. And it's perfectly legal to do so in most states. But e-waste shouldn't go into the trash, because of the potential for the toxic materials in it to leach into groundwater (or get emitted from incinerators) as well as the amount of recoverable resources being wasted. Instead it should get recycled, but people need to be careful in selecting a recycler. Sadly, many recyclers don't really recycle electronics, they export them to developing nations, where they are badly handled, and the toxics inside cause significant harm. So we need to make sure we use recyclers who are not exporters. One way to tell is to look for recyclers who are “e-Stewards”—part of a network of recyclers who have been qualified under a program run by one of our partner groups, the Basel Action Network. They can be found at www.e-stewards.org.

In the U.S. we throw away over 3 million tons of e-waste every year. Only 15% is recycled. What really happens to ewaste?

Legitimate recyclers are really demanufacturers. They take apart the products and use different means to separate them into the various material streams that they can sell into recovery markets. Reusable products, components or parts should be refurbished or repaired here, and then sold into various markets. But what many recyclers will do with a load of e-waste—let's say everything they collected at your community recycling event on Earth Day—is to pull out the items with the most value (like laptops or cellphones) and then load the rest onto a shipping container. Then they sell it to a waste trade broker, who gets the container to the port, and off it goes to China, India, Ghana, Nigeria, or other developing countries. It ends up in these very crude metals recovery operations—where they are bashing the equipment open to get at the metals inside. They cook the circuit boards in a wok or over a burner to melt the solder to recover the lead, so they breathe the lead fumes. They pour acids on the circuit boards to get at the gold and other precious metals. And they burn the plastics, which emits dioxin, one of the worst poisons you can breathe.

When you talk about leveraging our purchasing power—are you talking about a boycott? Or collaborative consumption? Maybe a Groupon for green electronics?

I think we need to use our collective consumer voices to say that we want the companies to provide better options, and that yes we WILL buy greener products if you provide them. Certainly, there are some slight improvements happening now, and we should be looking for those when we make buying decisions. (We have information about that on our website.)

Don't you think that the individual's purchases are fairly insignificant when considering the CE that enterprises consume? Are we right to make this consumer play the priority?

Actually, in many categories, individual purchasers are significant—like televisions, mobile phones, games, and certain categories of notebooks, like netbooks and tablets. Plus individuals can (and do) push their employers to pay attention to this in what they buy.

What are your feelings about standards like EPEAT? More of the same with incrementally better requirements?

EPEAT is a start, but honestly it's a very modest start. EPEAT can only require product features or performance that are already available in the marketplace or soon to be available. The manufacturers (who have a large voice in setting EPEAT standards) won't support “reach” criteria that none of them can meet now, and many want to set the bar pretty low. For instance, in the current standards development process for televisions, the TV companies don't even want Energy Star to be a mandatory criteria.

Who is doing well in this space?

Different companies do well in small parts of the puzzle, but no single company seems to excel overall. On takeback and recycling (in the U.S. at least), Dell has been the most aggressive in building a large takeback infrastructure and program. On toxic chemicals, some companies are showing leadership in phasing out certain targetted chemicals of high concern, like brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and PVC. Apple was the first to move out of the whole category of halogenated flame retardants. Nokia has been a leader on PVC-free. Others have moved out of BFRs or have set timelines to do that, and are producing some BFR and PVC-free product lines. But this is such a tiny step along a very long continuum of “greening” their supply chain. Many companies don't even know what the chemicals are in their products—the production has been completely outsourced to various contract manufacturers. Sony-Ericsson has instituted a materials declaration system, requiring their suppliers to disclose all the substances used in their products. This is a good pro-active step—companies really need to ask more than “do you use any of these chemicals that are known to be high hazard” but what are all the chemicals you use, and how have you tested them to evaluate the hazards?

If communication with the companies that make consumer electronics is key, then designers are in a position of great influence. What would you recommend to a designer who makes their living creating these products?

Designers are definitely the key to developing green electronics. The first thing I would do would be to find a savvy recycler to advise me on recyclability issues. I'd take my company's existing products to that recycler's facility and have him take them apart in front of me and my team, and talk me through the challenges for disassembling the products. (Too many different type of screws, impossible fasteners, can't find the fastener, etc.) If it takes too long to disassemble (compared to the value of what's inside), that's a disincentive to recycle and an incentive to export the product. I'd ask them to show me how they can tell where all the hazardous components (batteries, circuit boards, lamps, etc.) are. These need to be removed if the product is going into a shredder but are often difficult to locate. Then I'd ask the recycler to talk to me about what he will do with all of the materials/components and which ones have a good market and which ones don't. The best way to make sure a product is not going to be recycled is to use materials that have little or no value as recycled content in some other product. If the recycler can't sell it, it's more likely to be exported or go into the landfill. Then I'd ask, would that answer be different if I used different materials? What if my goal was to use materials that could be recycled back into the company's own products. (Closed loop recycling). What would I need to do differently. I would probably need more than just this recycler to figure out the complete answer there, but that's a very key question that designers are in the best position to be asking and figuring out the path forward, even if it's incremental. What would it take to make this product completely closed-loop recyclable? It might mean using materials (like metals instead of plastic) that are more expensive on the front end, but if you can keep recovering them (in your company's takeback program and other ways), and if it reduces the need for buying virgin content (like with plastics), what's the upside there, in cost, energy footprint, and other measures important for your sustainability goals. I think if companies could sell products that they could honestly say they were recycling back into their own products, they would be huge in the marketplace. Many people don't want to stop buying their new gadgets all the time, so knowing that you can buy one that is truly recyclable would be very popular.

I'd also talk to the sustainability person for my company about how changes in the products designs could translate into meeting sustainability goals, and other metrics that can be used in marketing the products. Companies have this notion that people don't care about green products. But surveys show people do care, but are wary of greenwashing.

You mentioned finding a “better option for what to buy.” What might be an example of this?

A better option could be the 100% closed loop recyclable or remanufacturable cell phone. Between the materials and parts, it could be completely recycled back into new cell phones. Because it would have high value as a recycled commodity, the company would buy it back from you at a decent price. Another example might be a TV with a full 10 year manufacturer warranty. They claim these new flat panel products will last from 10 to 15 years. Why not back that up with a warranty? Even just focusing on the warranties on all electronics would make a big difference when it comes to making longer lasting products. I think we'd see more modular designs to enable fast warranty repairs, as well as selecting components that don't fail so soon. If new printers included a minimum of a three year warranty, some of these disposable products would probably disappear, which would be a good thing. In the long term, a “better option” has to mean that they have actually figured out what chemicals are in the products, and they've actually tested them and have replaced the hazardous chemicals with safer alternatives.

I completely agree that we need to involve policymakers in this conversation, but do you think writing emails or texts to elected officials is really the best way to make change? It seems limited and piecemeal. No?

It's a part of making change. Certainly the state laws that mandate companies to take back and recycle their products are the driving force for electronics takeback in this country. Most of the companies' voluntary programs are weak, but in states with strong laws, they really work at it.

The state laws on chemicals restrictions are also driving some change. But it's just as important for consumers to be contacting the brand owner companies themselves, not just the government, to say that we want the companies to do better in providing genuine green electronics, not just greenwashed ones.

While we look for a silver bullet, we honestly need an silver buckshot. That means that consumers, designers/manufacturers, and legislators need to work together to create solutions. What is your nirvana scenario for how this might work?

Absolutely. I'd love to see some kind of consortium of the companies, designers, legislators, consumers and academics who really want to push for green products. Not the kind of stakeholder process where half of the stakeholders are there to make sure there is no progress. But a true leadership group. I think this would be an international effort—Europe is always ahead of us on things like this. Maybe it would be the Green Electronics Challenge—that would emerge with a list of longterm goals or criteria for what comprise green electronics, with an industry roadmap for getting there. It would need to identify (or develop) tools for measuring whether products meet the metrics – like a tool for determining how infinitely recyclable a product really is, (not just in theory). I think the companies are simply not challenging (or funding) their designers to come up with greener products, and to use their innovation talents to find green solutions. This endeavor would be all about that challenge. It would be where the brand owners who really want to make sustainable products can lay out the challenges, and the Designers Accord members would figure out the process for how to overcome them.

It's very likely that some kind of cooperative research effort is also needed to really find safer alternatives to the toxic chemicals used in electronics. It's a heavy lift for any individual company to do this research alone—and many of these companies don't even have in-house research units. Having the Green Electronics Challenge relying on safer chemicals to achieve the goals would help create incentives for this research, but some joint ventures for developing the alternatives is probably also needed here.

Ricoh Electronics, Inc. Announces Plans for Solar System at Headquarters Building
    Posted By Betsy Kraat

WEST CALDWELL–Ricoh Americas Corporation, a leading provider of digital office equipment and advanced document management solutions and services, announced that the Ricoh Electronics, Inc. headquarters in Tustin, CA, is in the process of installing a rooftop solar energy system, which when completed in 2011, will supply 10 percent (approximately 350,000 kWH) of the headquarters building's electricity.

The system will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 98.1 metric tons/year(i) and will provide Ricoh Electronics, Inc. with annual electricity cost savings of more than $56,000.

Ricoh has been steadfastly committed to the environment for over 30 years. In 1976, Ricoh established the Environmental Protection Group responsible for keeping Ricoh's environmental goals and strategies as key considerations when planning, developing, designing and promoting new products and services. In 2003, Ricoh introduced its first “Eco-Board” in Osaka, Japan, a billboard powered solely by renewable energy. A billboard powered 100% by the sun debuted in New York City's Times Square early 2010. Ricoh also set medium and long-term targets in 2009, to reduce the total CO2 emissions to 30% by fiscal year 2020 and 87.5% by fiscal year 2050, as compared to fiscal year 2000.

Ricoh Electronics, Inc.'s solar-powered facility is another example of Ricoh's continued dedication to the environment. Ricoh's Atsugi and Numazu facilities in Japan currently have solar power systems installed, but the Tustin facility will be the first outside of Japan.

Ricoh Electronics, Inc. engaged SPG Solar Inc., a leader in the development, design and installation of high-performance solar energy systems, to manage the project. SPG Solar will be installing nearly 1,000 cutting-edge, silicone crystal solar panels to create the solar energy system on Ricoh Electronics, Inc.'s existing headquarters building. The system takes advantage of Ricoh Electronics, Inc.'s location in sunny Southern California. Ricoh Electronics, Inc. offset approximately 60 percent of the solar system's cost by incentives offered by the federal and state government, and expects to recoup its costs for the project in 5.5 years.

Ricoh Electronics, Inc. achieved zero waste to landfill status in 2001, and all its operations have maintained certification to ISO 14001 since 1999. In addition, Ricoh Electronics, Inc. employees are actively engaged in sustainability initiatives, including submitting 1,360 improvement suggestions in FY 2009, which resulted in over $2 million in savings.

Ricoh Electronics, Inc. will host a grand opening ceremony upon completion of the solar system installation in early 2011. The ceremony will include the unveiling of a display in the headquarters building's lobby which streams real-time solar energy performance and production data.

Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) diodes might just be the technology that allows electronics achieve the next big leap in processing speed. Research into diode design conducted at the Oregon State University (OSU) has revealed this week cheaper and easier to manufacture MIM diodes that will also eliminate speed restrictions of electronic circuits that have baffled materials researchers since the 1960's.

“Researchers have been trying to do this for decades, until now without success. It’s a basic way to eliminate the current speed limitations of electrons that have to move through materials,” OSU materials chemistry professor, Douglas Keszler said.
“This is a fundamental change in the way you could produce electronic products at high speed on a huge scale at very low cost, even less than with conventional methods,” he said.

“For a long time, everyone has wanted something that takes us beyond silicon. This could be a way to simply print electronics on a huge size scale even less expensively than we can now. And when the products begin to emerge the increase in speed of operation could be enormous,” Keszler said.

Traditional silicon-based materials used in electronics work by limiting the flow of electrons using transistors, a process that restricts how quickly electrons can move across a circuit – and therefore how quickly your computer or iPhone can load a program. MIM diodes allow almost instantaneous electron transfer through the insulator surface – a major step in eliminating the 50 year-old speed barrier found in transistor based electronics.

    The Breakthrough

While MIM diodes have been around for a while now, the biggest problem has been controlling electron flow to make it even across the entire surface of the diode. The breakthrough was to use a super smooth metal ZrCuAlNi in thin film form as opposed Aluminium (Al) which is comparatively rough. The roughness of the Al electrodes used in previous MIM diode research had resulted in poor consistency in electron flow. Now with the flatter ZrCuAlNi electrodes this flow of electrons can be controlled much more easily. So the diode is constructed with two ZrCuAlNi electrodes with a SiO2 insulator layer in between. A patent has been applied for on this new technology.

“When they first started to develop more sophisticated materials for the display industry, they knew this type of MIM diode was what they needed, but they couldn’t make it work,” Keszler said. “Now we can, and it could probably be used with a range of metals that are inexpensive and easily available, like copper, nickel or aluminum. It’s also much simpler, less costly and easier to fabricate.”

University scientists will initially apply the work to innovations in electronic displays, but they say many applications are possible. High speed computers and electronics that aren't limited by transistors are possibilities.

The Paper Advancing MIM Electronics: Amorphous Metal Electrodes is published in Advanced Materials.

    Pink Netbook by Blondie's Highlights

    @Tuan

“I agree that IPhones and iPads may prevent people from buying a DS or PSP because they are fulfilling their portable gaming needs. Who wants to carry around another device unless you're a very serious gamer?”

Tuan, you are only implementing your argument towards adult and teenage gamers (though the teenage gamers have to have some sort of financial access in order to spend a few bucks for a few game apps). iPhones and iPads are not preventing parents from buying a gaming console (e.g. Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS/DSi, or a PSP) for their children. I can understand if the parent owns either an iPhone/Ipod touch/iPad and are willing to lend the device to their kid so they can be entertained with the games that the parent already owns or willing to buy the game for their kid. However, would that parent think twice about lending the device if the child happens to damage it? No if he/she paid for that applecare. But really, if we are talking about one's device being damage, then i would not minding spending a few extra bucks for a DS/PSP and the store's extended warranty. That extended warranty is usually a few bucks cheaper than the applecare for either device that I had previously mentioned.

And if you look at a developer's viewpoint, they can probably milk more mullah from their buyers by charging a bit at a time for some minor/huge updates, eg COD zombies or Tap Tap. What I am trying to say is that there is never a one-time-spending for games and the consoles. what if in the span of over a couple of years, these developers start introducing games that requires more memory, more battery lifespan, and more graphic demands? those games will make your ipod touch gen II or iPhone 3GS obsolete so u need to buy iPod touch gen XI or iPhone gen XI.

It has happened to most computer users from time to time – getting a computer virus on their hard drives. Mac users may snicker a bit as it is a much less common phenomenon on their systems, but they should not laugh too hard. It is not because they run on a cleaner OS that primarily protects them (although they do), it is because they run on a less popular OS that few malcontents write viruses for (yet). As Macs continue to gain market share, they will find more and more viruses coming their way. The point being that nearly everybody is at risk for contracting a computer virus in the near future.

How does one know when they have a computer virus? There are many symptoms of an infected computer. Examples would be if the hard drive is running abnormally slow, if legitimate files are showing up as corrupted, frequent error messages appearing, or (the obvious one) if your antivirus software pop-ups a warning (make sure that it is your antivirus software issuing the warning and not a fake program that you never installed initially). If it is determined that a virus may be present, this is what to do:

Step 1 – Stop your other tasks. If the virus is rather innocuous, sometimes the immediate inclination is just to continue working around it. This is a bad idea for multiple reasons. First, the longer that the virus is left alone, the more likely it is to imbed itself deeper on the hard drive and cause more damage to more files. Just because it is not obviously doing anything does not mean that it is not doing work itself. Second, more and more viruses are coupled with spyware and whatever is on your machine may become obvious to the watchful eyes of identity thieves. It is best not to run that risk.

Step 2 – Run anti-virus/anti-malware software. Norton, McAfee, Malwarebytes – all of these programs have a good track record for finding and removing most viruses. Let them do a full system scan and see what they turn up. They not only find most computer viruses, but also delete and/or quarantine the infected files to prevent further damage.

Step 3 – Reboot, ensure that the virus did not return. It is not uncommon for a virus to play dead. Many can appear to be successfully deleted only to reinstall themselves when the computer starts up again. Doing a reboot and then re-scanning the computer is a good way to make sure that the virus will not return on its own.

If the virus is still persisting, there is a point where it just becomes more efficient to junk the infected computer. If you have any important files that need to be moved to a new computer, you may want to have a data recovery group do the extraction if you are afraid that doing so yourself could lead to the virus being transported as well. Computer viruses can ruin an individual’s day, but by following the steps above, they do not have to be a long term issue.
